I love sparkling lights at a party…who doesn’t? I assume it is what makes people keep Christmas Lights up all year. (Just to be clear, I am not one of those people).
These lights would be perfect at an end of summer party.
And look at this cool tent made of lights! How beautiful!
My husband’s 30th birthday will be around Thanksgiving. Since we are planning to travel to Los Angeles to celebrate — the majority of his friends and family are there– we are in preparatory party planning mode.
I saw these images and fell in love! How great would it would it be to have a party like this– with a food truck!
This party was in San Diego, in a parking lot behind the Casa Atrelexia shop. Complete with food, popsicles, a DJ, summer movies, and super fun decor, this parking lot party offered unexpected treats.
Wouldn’t this be great for a birthday party? Since our party is in November, I would make it more fall themed (easy) and a little more masculine (not as easy). Any ideas, readers? And any ideas of where to host a party in a parking lot in Los Angeles?
Recently I visited the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in NYC. We went on a free night — which was a bad idea. It was so incredibly packed — but even through the people we could see what a beautiful venue– and great museum– it is, and we promised to come back another time.
As the home of Andrew Carnegie, you can imagine its beauty and vastness. The carved dark wood inside with a big sweeping staircase– although made cool by the design exhibits housed in it’s large rooms. But the part I noticed first were the gardens.
Well manicured and kept in top shape. In New York it can be hard to find private outdoor space– but they have it.
I also love that they are creative with the space, making the visitor booth into a bar.
If the weather isn’t right for an outdoor space, they also have a conservatory that will keep you cool (or warm) while enjoying the greenery.
To use the space you have to be a donor to the museum. The level at which you give determines which spaces you can use.
Want to visit anyway? The museum hosts a weekly party in the garden on Fridays from 6-9 PM.
A fantastic color combo can never go wrong. Especially when you add a little pop of color. This hotel did a great job branding. I want to stay there and I haven’t even seen pictures of the bathroom!
Love it!
Did you all have a good weekend? Mine was busy, with a pot luck picnic and hosting a dinner party. I’ll have details to share later in the week.
But today I want to talk about this beautiful new trend with tents that I am seeing. For awhile tents were all the rage. Everyone having events used a tent. They were pretty and rain back up all in one! More recently, outdoor dining has been popular– a la a backyard event. People who will risk the weather and the reward is worth it. Now I am starting to see a melding of these trends– and the results are breathtaking! Take a look…
I didn’t think that weddings set in a vineyard could get any more beautiful, until I saw this draped tent. It provided the perfect bit of shade, without blocking the views.
And then I saw this event– I actually gasped out loud. The draped tent. The chandelier. The lights. Oh my.
If this is the new direction of tents, I am definitely on board.
I’ve mentioned before how important it is to have a theme for your event, but picking one can be a challenge! Sometimes there are too many choices, and other times not enough. These guidelines will give you some things to think about to help you narrow in on the right choice for your event.
1. Hobbies/personal interests
Your event should reflect you or your guest of honor. For example, my dad loves golf. It’s always easy to find gifts for him– and if I threw him a Father’s Day Party, it would definitely have a golf theme.
This couple loved baseball, so they incorporated it into their big day.
I especially like their themed favors. So cute!
2. Location/Setting.
If you want to have your event in your backyard, a picnic theme is probably easier to pull off than a flashy, glamorous type event (depending on your backyard!). If your event is in a loft, a woodsy theme might be hard, but a modern, glam event might feel just right.
One of the best examples of this is a wedding in an vineyard. Why even try to fight it?
3. Season.
This one is important for color choice. Deep, rich colors work better in the fall/winter and bright, bold and pastels work nicely in spring/summer. This general rule of thumb helps with the mood, but also makes your shopping easier. Just try to find maroon colored napkins in summer. Not an easy task.
White is one of the few exceptions. It works for spring…
Or in winter. Beautiful!
4. Formality.
Some themes have a defined level of formality: a BBQ will be casual, while a cocktail event is more dressy. Some of the formality will be decided by the setting and location, but as the host you still have final say. Your guest list might also give you an idea. If there are a lot of kids, maybe a black tie event isn’t appropriate. Either way, make sure this choice reflects you.
This casual event looks fun…
And so does this elegant event. Pick what works for you and your guests!
5. Budget.
Certain themes will be more expensive than others. If you’re on a tight budget, you’ll probably want to stick to a simpler, more general theme (like nature-inspired)–or something very specific (ducks, for example). You’ll be able to find more products that fit your theme at different price points. If your budget is larger, you can mix and match styles and themes, for one-of-a-kind decor features.
Using all the same flowers is cost efficient and beautiful…
While the mixing of these different flowers create a modern yet casual feel.
By thinking through theses guidelines, I hope picking a theme will much easier. Which ever directions you chose to go– which ever works best for you– there are terrific choices out there that will make your party successful.
Good Luck!
Maybe your friend is celebrating a big birthday or her first kid. Or maybe your brother is in town. Maybe you want to do something fun for your holiday party. But you really don’t have the time to cook, clean, decorate and plan.
Enter Vicky & Lysnader. They will take care of everything for you– including holding the event in their store front– which is decorated to look like the fake couples home. Not your every day party planners, this duo will keep dinner conversation going, lead games and activities, as well as taking care of the food. And it’s BYOB– so you can still create that signature cocktail.
I love that these entrepreneurs are doing something that they really enjoy. Why didn’t I think of it first?
I visited the New Museum today– probably my favorite art museum in New York– and was reminded of their amazing event space on the 7th floor. It has a great white indoor space, and an outdoor terrace with amazing views. Check out this night time shot:
What a dream venue!
You could do so many cool things with this space— the fact that it is in a museum just begs for creativity. Look at these centerpieces– how fun to use pots and pans!
This venue is not huge, with cocktail receptions for up to 200 people, or seated dinners for up to 120. And you have to deal their caterer– Creative Edge Parties. Based on the web-site they seem to be more interested in design and being edgy than focusing on food. And neither the caterer or the museum list their prices…yikes! This is New York after all!
But a girl can dream, right?
