Passport of Experiences

You probably already know that I love travel related things, but this awesome execution by the University of North Texas to take mandatory requirements of education exploration into a passport is just too cool. I love the idea of turning “musts” into something fun and engaging.

Event Planners– and many parents(!)– turn the ordinary into a game everyday. How fun would life be if we all did this? Have to go a trade show and speak to so many people? Turn it into a passport game! Chores to do, or want your kids to do? Give them stamps or stickers for every activity completed! Want your guests to check out a certain number of stations at your event? Give them an incentive to do so!

See more of their beautiful work here.

Red + Gold Stars

Since I had lots of red paper left over from yesterday’s project, I thought I would add to the Christmas decorations in my temporary apartment.

So I free-handed a handful of different sized stars–

Punched holes in them with a tiny hole punch–

Threaded them with some gold string–

And hung them from my entry way light. I think it adds some holiday fun right when you enter the room!

What do you think?

Red + Gold Polka Dot Christmas

I’ve mentioned that our apartment is temporary, but since we will be here for Christmas, I had to add a little holiday flair that isn’t too intensive. {Did I mention I live on the 5th floor? Not only do I not have space for a tree, I’m not carrying it up– or down all of those stairs!}  I saw this inspiration on Pinterest and knew it would come in handy in any city. And it did.

It look about 5 different stores– stationery stores, printers, paper suppliers– before finding someone who could help me. With varying levels of English, the picture was useful to show them {the above image on Pinterest mobile} –and finally, Steve from Progressive Press was my guy! We discussed color options and he showed me some of his other {beautiful} printing work.  In the end, he gave me the strips of paper for free, since they were scraps. Steve is definitely my guy for all my printing and paper needs. I also picked up some washi tape at CitySuper and was ready to go.

Since Steve’s strips were the perfect length, all I had to do was trim a few strips to varying lengths, and tape them to the wall to create this–

{ugh, I can’t wait to get my camera back and not have to rely on my iphone to show you these projects!}

I free-handed the star, then used the gold polka dot washi tape to help it pop, as a tree- topper should!

I’m happy with how it came out. It adds the perfect amount of holiday to the apartment. Even though it took an afternoon of talking to different vendors to get the paper, I think the effect is worth it!

Thanksgiving Fun with Patterned Paper

If you are like me, you save every little scrap of patterned paper left overs. Firstly– because that stuff is expensive! Secondly –because that project that needs just the tiniest touch of pattern to liven it up is right around the corner.

That project turns out to be Thanksgiving. The dinner table already has so much going on, with all the plates, glasses, food and condiments. Just a little touch of a pattern {or contrasting patterns} can make a table come together. So I love these ideas from Hello! Lucky for how to use it. I wouldn’t use all of them all at once {not with my scrap pieces, anyway!} but 1 or 2 could kick up the style on your T-day table.

Ask-A-Planner

This week’s question comes from Mary in Los Angeles, CA via Facebook.

Dear Sara,

We are planning a Black Tie Gala Dinner as a fundraiser for my program. Here’s a question: Are name badges usually made for the guests? If not, what name tags can be made for “Gala” guests? We aren’t sure we want to use a badge that clips to your tuxedo or cocktail dress. Any advice?

Dear Mary,

This is a great question, as it’s something every non-profit struggles to answer. It has literally come up at nearly non-profit event I have planned.  We want guests to connect and build community at our events, but what guest wants to figure out where to clip or stick a name tag to a strapless dress?

I would offer printed escort cards with their names and table numbers that they pick up at cocktail hour. Not only will it help them remember where they are sitting {bonus points if the back of the card has a map of the table layout!} they can also show that card to someone if the person can’t hear or wants their last name, or spelling, etc.

My husband and I went to a gala for the ballet in the spring this year {one the best events I’ve been to ever!}. They used this method and it worked well. During cocktail hour we talked to another couple and when it was time to head in for dinner, we shared our escort cards. It helped cement their name {like a name tag would}, especially as it noise level rose in the marble atrium. It’s classy to have nice paper products {that’s why we have them at weddings} and useful for the guests to have their table number handy in a large room.

Hope that helps!

Ask A Planner

Today’s question comes from Liza in Belgium, via Facebook.

She asks:

How long in advance do I need to send invites for a themed party when dressing up is preferred?

Dear Liza–

This is a great question. Dress up parties can be a lot of fun– but a lot of work– for your guests, so giving them lots of heads up time is a wonderfully thoughtful idea.

My general rule of thumb is about 6 weeks — for a wedding, party, whatever the case may be. If the dress up request is complicated {say Louis XIV} I might consider save-the-dates, or making sure invites are in guests hand at 6 weeks prior. If the dress up is a more liberal {pirates or greeks} you have a little more flexibility. And if the dress up event is expected {like Halloween} and guests have probably already considered costume options, only a few weeks are necessary.

I hope this helps– and your party {and costume!} is a swinging success! As always, we’d love to see your pictures.

xoxo

Two Faced Paper

I’m loving this trend of reversible paper. Beyond gift wrapping, these papers could be used as a table runner, on a photo backdrop, or even framed in a group. Gorgeous, right?
