How To: Fruit Filled Unicorn Horns

The most common questions I’m getting right now is asking how-to {like this one, on balloon backdrops}, so this weeks Ask-A-Planner is how to make these fun unicorn horns.

These coated sugar cones were paired with fruit at a little girls birthday. The cones acted as the cup for the rainbow fruit choices {see below}– although that was a little hard to communicate to the guests, since you want to display them so they look like unicorn horns. But I think they turned out really cute and made a big impact.

First, we coated the cones using colored royal icing — the same type you might use for decorating sugar cookies. We just used food coloring to get the shade of purple we wanted. You’ll want the consistency a little thicker so there isn’t too much run-off. Then let the icing dry and harden. If you aren’t happy with the coating, you can give it another coat. {You could also use colored almond bark or candy melt and dip the cones, but the royal icing worked for us.}
Once the coating is dry, use a pastry bag (or ziplock baggie with a small hole in the corner) to pipe white royal icing around the cone in a spiral. Again, you’ll want thicker royal icing that you might use for outlining sugar cookies. It takes a bit to master getting the spiral just right, but after a few practice cones, you’ll get the hang of it.
Here’s some info on royal icing consistency, if you want some more details.

Man Party

I think we can all agree that designing a party for a man can be hard. So many of the men in my life are so self-sufficient that it’s hard to buy a gift for them, let alone plan an entire evening of fun to their tastes. But these ladies put together an awesome manly party for their four husbands with neighboring birthday dates. From the invites to the representation of the men of honor, this party is top notch. {Angela Hardison via You Are My Fav}

Travel Themed Wedding

My husband pointed out today that I’ve been trending towards Bohemian lately. My inner boho chic goddess is coming out, inspired by Turkey. This wedding had a lot going for it already with its vintage global look, but then this cute couple added a travel theme, and I was done.  I fell in love immediately. {see more at the Rock n’ Roll Bride}

Foreign Funds Fun

We always end up with a few bills left over from our travels and don’t know what to do with them. This artist made cool pom poms out off money from around the world. Wouldn’t these be a cool addition to the globe party? {via Curious & Co.}

Bridal Shower Trends

Megan is having a classy, modern brunch thrown by her mother’s stylish friends, who are looking for some ideas.

These invitations are for multiple couples being showered, but you could switch it up to include the list of hostess. How nice to let the bride know all the people that support her at this exciting time! And if the shower is this summer,  wouldn’t  it be fun to host a coed crawfish broil?

I also like the idea of these ladies sending the bride into marriage {and the wedding} with everything she needs with a “Something Blue” party.

I’m not a big bloody mary fan, but this martini looks amazing. Whether its a bellinis or arnold palmers, this is the ideal modern bar — DIY, sleek and streamlined. {Does anyone know where this image is from?}

A big trend {and perfect for brunch!} is edible escort cards. These apple turnovers would be a great appetizer, too.
