Ask A Planner

Today’s question comes from Liza in Belgium, via Facebook.

She asks:

How long in advance do I need to send invites for a themed party when dressing up is preferred?

Dear Liza–

This is a great question. Dress up parties can be a lot of fun– but a lot of work– for your guests, so giving them lots of heads up time is a wonderfully thoughtful idea.

My general rule of thumb is about 6 weeks — for a wedding, party, whatever the case may be. If the dress up request is complicated {say Louis XIV} I might consider save-the-dates, or making sure invites are in guests hand at 6 weeks prior. If the dress up is a more liberal {pirates or greeks} you have a little more flexibility. And if the dress up event is expected {like Halloween} and guests have probably already considered costume options, only a few weeks are necessary.

I hope this helps– and your party {and costume!} is a swinging success! As always, we’d love to see your pictures.

xoxo

My new series where you can ask your questions for anything party!

Today’s question comes from Samantha from Seattle. She writes:

I am getting married in July and wanted to know when we should send out invites. Thanks!

Hi Samantha,

Congrats on your engagement– and up coming wedding!

Six weeks before the wedding is plenty– especially if you sent out a save-the-date (best sent out 6-10 months prior to the event. Any more is excessive). If you didn’t send an early reminder, then 7-8 weeks is okay, but no more than that. For RSVP responses, ask for replys no later than 2-3 weeks before the wedding date. You know your family and friends best– if you will have to chase your family and friends for replies, give yourself a little extra time (3 weeks), or if your guests are fairly prompt (2 weeks). The caterer usually requests the final count  3-5 days prior to the event so plan accordingly with your follow ups. Check your contract to be sure.

The Cutest Boy Shower Ever

I love, love, love this bow-tie shower for a mommy expecting a little boy. They thought of every detail!

That banner– made from diapers.

The guests played themed mad-lib games.

Naturally, they served bow-tie pasta.

For favors, guests got to wear a personal bow-tie, and got a cute little sack.

Well done! Loving this for some boy inspiration.
