You Can Take The Girl Out of the South…

Even though I live on the outside of the world and no longer anywhere near the South, my idea of grilling out includes burgers, baked beans and iced tea. It was a gorgeous day, sunny if a bit chilly, so we took advantage and indulged our roots.

Naturally, we started with some drinks– Arnold Palmers. A little iced tea, and a little lemonade, and a little vodka, if you like.

Since we had some young guests coming, I got some colored chalk to use on our stone tile terrace to keep them entertained.

Then, of course, the food! Hamburgers, my mom’s famous baked beans, layer salad, potato chips and brownies. What else could you ask for in a southern BBQ?!

Our plates–

Beans were still to come {don’t worry, Mom!}. Is was great fun, then we cuddled up and watched some Oscar movies. A great Saturday. xoxo

Last Minute Christmas Decorations

Need some last minute holiday cheer? Or does your study or bathroom or other small space need a some decoration? Is it Christmas Eve and you thought you could do without a tree but with the holiday upon us, did you realize it doesn’t feel right without it?

If any of that sounds like you, here are some quick, small space ideas for adding a Christmas tree to your life this year. Most of these things you probably already have around the house– all you need is bare wall.

1: Add some sparkly ribbon around a cone

2: Draw a tree on chalkboard

3: Cut some fringe to give your tree some texture

4: Fold up some newspaper and give it a little pop with green paint

5: Cut a few strips of paper and attach with washi tape

6: Put up some pictures in the shape of a tree

Red + Gold Wrapping

Can you take 2 days of wrapping in a row?? Well, it’s the season, right?

As I mentioned we will be moving soon– right before Christmas, in fact, so I didn’t want to gather lots of paper and things, carry them up 5 flights of stairs, just to move them again. But, of course, I still want it to be pretty and match my Christmas tree. What’s a crafty girl to do?

Use what’s on hand, of course!

I had a brown paper bag, pulled out my washi tape and scissors and cut that bad boy up.

I wrapped the gifts in brown paper, then went to work with washi tape that matched my tree (polka dots, of course).

I started with a simple weave pattern on the boxier one. {I kind of dig how the gold over the red gives it a 3-D look.}

But for the envelope shaped one, I really wanted a bow. So I wound the washi tape into a circle, connecting it just on the bottom, until it was the desired size.

It turned out a bit like a rosette, but I’m ok with that. And the gold really adds some sparkle.

I’ve got a few more to wrap, but I’m really liking this theme!

Modern Black & White Dinner Party

We had some friends over for dinner this past weekend, so I decided to flex my creative muscle a bit. What do you think?

I used washi tape down the table to create a runner, and printed out this arrow paper for the flower and tags on the drinks. My husband made an amazing dinner with an amuse bouche of butternut squash soup with blts, which might have been my favorite part. For dessert, we added vodka and sparkling wine to the sorbet to make a little cocktail, and added the b&w straws. Our guests appreciated our effort and it was a great nite. Yea for friends! xox0

Stuck?

I know I talk about washi tape all the time, but its such a fun product. It’s good for so many things. I’ve used on home projects {here and here} and event projects {herehere and here}, but I wanted to do a round up on some of the more creative uses of the tape. Some less obvious uses for tape.

How about to decorate and personalize vases:

Or to decorate furniture:

Or table numbers on top:

To decorate presents:

Or cards and tags:

Or, with school starting, use it to cover your books:

And– did you hear? They now have large size washi for covering the walls. OMG. My walls will never be the same.

Any other ideas? I’d love to hear them!

Washi Tape Wall Treatment

Remember this wall treatment from our living room office?

Well, I wanted do something for office in our bedroom. I was thinking chevron, but then I saw this:

(Seriously, if you are not on pintrest, you should be! Let me know if you need an invite.)

I didn’t find black masking tape at Target, but realized I had some left over black and white washi tape. So I used  that. I think the texture is kinda fun, don’t you?

I used the washi tape to customize our bed side lamp shades (on the left), so it matches those nicely.

It’s not perfect, but it works. Now that I know it works, I might try some more!

What do you think of my wall treatments?

Christmas Tree

We are not going home for Christmas this year. It’s the first time — well, practically ever. So we don’t have a Christmas tree– and we aren’t sure we want to invest in one. (who knows where we will be next year!).

I have mentioned how much I love the Japanese Washi Tape. Well, I had some left over from C’s party, one that was mostly green and one that is mostly red. So I taped a tree out on the wall– and I think it turned out really cute!

I added some ornaments with the red tape.

And I added a star at the top.

It adds some festivity to our tiny apartment– and it makes me smile every time I walk by.
